Goethals Bridge

Elizabeth, N.J., and Staten Island, N.Y

The Goethals Bridge Replacement Project began in May 2014 to replace the original Goethals Bridge with dual bridges, spanning the Arthur Kill.. The demolition process began in 2017, shortly after the new roadway opened in February, and required reversing the order of the original bridge’s construction. The bridge, built in June 1928, stood 140 feet above the waterway. JP Hogan was contracted to road saw the existing bridge deck and wire saw the columns and piers using WireCom diamond wire. Due to large amounts of reinforced steel embedded in the concrete piers and the exceptionally hard concrete, WireCom worked with the contractor to rework the beads bond matrix to enable faster sawing.
